Fun Fact Fridays: Horses!

This week's Fun Fact Friday focuses on horses! Horses can sleep both lying down and standing up! A domestic horse's lifespan is normally around 25 years but in the 19th century horse named ‘Old Billy’ is said to have lived 62 years. Horses can gallop around 27mph however, the fastest recorded speed of all time for a galloping horse was about 55mph. Because of where their eyes are placed, on the side of their heads, horses are capable of seeing nearly 360 degrees around them. Contrary to common belief a pony is NOT a baby horse, infant horses are called colts for males and fillies for females. Ponies are small horses that only grow to be about 14.2 hands where as horses are 14.2 hands or taller. Hands is the measuring system used when calculating the height of a horse, foul or pony and 14.2 hands is equal to about 58 inches or 147 centimeters.
